Why Black Friday is now Cyber Friday

Posted by Paola Moretto on Nov 25, 2015 1:44:21 PM

This year REI announced to the world that it would keep its 143 retail locations closed on Black Friday (and Thanksgiving day). Similarly, a growing number of stores, including Marshalls, Crate and Barrel, and many more are committing to remain closed on Thanksgiving day at a minimum.

And while REI, for one, has oriented its #OptOutside campaign as an invitation to reconnect with family and friends by getting out of doors together, there is also another underlying reality: the fact is, the vast majority of shoppers who want to shop on Thanksgiving or even Black Friday can do so online. As puts it, “The outdoors, and the website, are always open” (emphasis mine).

Black Friday is the new Cyber Monday. Or rather, welcome to Cyber Friday.

The cloud is the new normal, and many other exciting takeaways from AWS re:Invent

Posted by Paola Moretto on Oct 21, 2015 11:01:56 AM

I’m just back from re:Invent, the Amazon Web Services (AWS) conference covering all things cloud. AWS is the largest public cloud provider by far and its speed of innovation is mind-boggling. re:Invent is always a great forum for getting the pulse of the industry and this year’s event underscored how astonishingly fast the cloud is growing. More than 19,000 guests attended with additional 38,000 watching on the live stream. The enterprise customers showcased included some major corporations like General Electric and Capital One.

Performance Testing and APM (Application Performance Management): Why you need to do both

Posted by Paola Moretto on Jul 29, 2015 10:00:00 AM

Earlier this year I wrote a post about Synthetic Testing and Real User Monitoring, and explained why these are complementary, not competing, approaches. Similarly, Performance Testing – aka synthetic testing - and APM – Application Performance Management and monitoring solutions are similar in that they are often regarded as two competing solutions, as if one were an alternative to the other. They are actually perfect complementary tools to achieve optimal performance for your application. Whether you develop web applications, SaaS products or mobile apps, you‘ll find both approaches to be absolutely necessary in your software operations. Here, I explain why. (I’ll use “monitoring solutions” as a synonym for APM solutions.)

It can’t be said enough: Performance testing ahead of time will help ensure smooth sailing in real time.

The lessons of

Posted by Paola Moretto on Mar 16, 2015 8:41:52 AM
In the fall of 2013, the newly launched website buckled under the weight of a crush of people trying to sign up for affordable health insurance. Although the site reportedly cost more than $500 million to build, it wasn’t adequately tested for high volumes, and what was to have been a celebrated milestone became a bit of a fiasco. That incident really highlighted for everybody that scale is not something that can be taken lightly.

This year we’ve just passed the second deadline to sign up for healthcare under the Affordable Care Act, and while the enrollment process generally went a lot more smoothly, it didn’t go off without a hitch. As a February 15 deadline neared, the site suffered a six-hour outage due to a glitch in connecting to an outside site for income verification.

New year off to a good start for women and minorities in high-tech - Intel takes a stand on diversity

Posted by Paola Moretto on Mar 10, 2015 2:40:57 PM

One of the themes I encounter consistently in my work as a woman heading a high-tech startup is the theme of gender. Women have long been a small minority in just about every corner of high-tech, from the cubicles to the boardroom, and I feel compelled to use my platform as a female founder of a high-tech startup to call attention to this lack of diversity. Last year, I had the opportunity to speak at multiple conferences and entrepreneur forums about all sorts of issues related to the cloud and enterprise software and the Portland startup community. But one of my comments that resonated the most was my description of the female founder of a high-tech startup as a unicorn with sparkles that is, a rare breed.
